Join Kathy Ekdahl of Personal Best Personal Training for a free ‘Introduction to Nordic Walking’ class. Nordic walking originated in 1997 in Scandinavia as a way for Cross Country Skiers to stay in shape. Nordic walking uses specially designed poles which enhance the walking experience, while decreasing impact and perceived exertion. Nordic Walkers burn up to 46% more calories than traditional walkers while the low impact nature of the activity makes this ideal for all fitness levels. Poles will be provided so RSVP is required to insure enough poles for all attendees. You may bring your own poles as well. Attendees must be able to walk 2 miles for this class.

Celebrate Bike to School Day on May 7th

Presented by: National Center for Safe Routes to School
Date: Wednesday, May 7th
Location: Check with your local school to see if they are participating this year.
Details: The first-ever National Bike to School Day took place on May 9, 2012, in coordination with the League of American Bicyclists’ National Bike Month. Almost 1,000 local events in 49 states and the District of Columbia joined together to encourage children to safely bicycle or walk to school.

Ways To Participate

1. Bicycle from Home

Great for: Students and families who live close enough to bicycle to school on a route that’s appropriate for these modes.
How it’s done: Encourage students and their families to bicycle to school. They might join other families and form groups in their neighborhoods to travel to school together.  This is the essence of Bike to School Days.

2. Designated Starting Points

Great for:  Families who live too far to bicycle, families with limited routes for bicycling, bus riders and children with disabilities.
How it’s done: Identify one or more locations where students and their families will gather to bike to school together or where families can park and make their way to school when they’re ready.  Have a parade, park and ride and stride…the sky’s the limit!

3. Bike At School

Great for: Families who live too far to bicycle, families with limited routes for bicycling, bus riders, children with disabilities and times when few parents can participate.
How it’s done:  Bike at school during an assembly, recess or as part of a class activity. Sometimes student aftercare providers will get involved by bicycling from school to the after-school facility. These events can foster a lifelong appreciation for bicycling and develop important safety skills.  They’re also the easiest way to include every student.

Stow Road, Marlborough Community Garden Plot Sign Up

It’s that time of year again to think about gardening! The City of Marlborough has a community garden on Stow Road where residents can grow organic vegetables and flowers. For those interested in obtaining a garden plot a meeting will be held as follows:

Date: Thursday March 12, 2015
Time: 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM
Location: Marlborough City Hall – Memorial Hall, 140 Main Street
What: Learn about the garden and sign up for a garden plot.

The garden is located at the Cider Knoll/Mello Family Meadow conservation land, next to the small parking lot on Stow Rd. The garden, which had its third successful year last year, is ready to receive new gardeners. There are 42 plots total, some are full size plots approximately 10’ x 20’ and some are half size plots approximately 10’ x 10’ in size. The rental fee of $25 per season per full plot, and $15 per season for a half plot will cover the cost of a garden plot and water. There is plenty of free parking at the site. Garden plots will be open for planting starting April 15th, weather permitting.

Spaces are assigned to returning gardeners first and on a lottery basis for the remaining plots. A little more than half the gardeners from last year are returning so there are plots still available for this years’ planting season. Sign up will begin at the March 12th meeting and will remain open until all plots are taken.

Questions?: If you cannot attend the meeting but are interested, you may contact the Conservation Commission by calling Priscilla Ryder at the Conservation Department 508-460-3768 or by e-mail at pryder@marlborough-ma.gov.
