“First Day” Hike

Details: Outdoors RX offers this free “first day” hike just for families on the first weekend of the new year. Callahan State Park is a large park with many different features, including forested trails, streams, wetlands, stone walls and hills. Exact route and length will depend on group’s interests and experience, but plan to be out for two hours. Children should be old enough to keep an easy adult pace for the duration or ride in a carrier. Water and Snacks recommended. Wear layers. Cancels for heavy snow or poor driving conditions.

Wayside’s Annual 5K Race

The White House Chair includes songs from the time of George Washington through Dwight D. Eisenhower and presents them in the style of an old-fashioned campaign rally. The production also includes stories and vignettes about candidates, presidents and the election process.

Edible Ecosystems Teaching Garden Workday

Details: Help establish this Edible Ecosystems (aka Permaculture) Garden with some manual things such as sheet mulching, pruning, taking out dead trees, a little bit of planting in the morning. In the afternoon, we’ll be doing more research-type activities such as marking the line of crown vetch invasion with flags, and taking data with releves (a method of assessing the fullness of each of the potential niches / layers of a patch).

Alex from Transition Framingham will be leading a bicycle caravan from Framingham in case you’d like company on the ride over. Email him to take part in the ride, or just show up at Wellesley College on your own!
